We at PIKE Off-road really cherish things that are bombproof and simple. There is a saddle shop in Amarillo Texas called Oliver Saddles. They have been making saddles since 1917. As a 20-something kid, I remember seeing those saddles, rough out, no tooling or fancy carvings, and coveting them. You would see way fancier saddles on ranches and at rodeos, but to me, they didn’t compare to the quality of an Oliver.
Why? I think it was the fact that, if you knew what you were looking at, you knew that saddle would be with you for 20 years, day in day out, tied to bulls, rained on, covered in mud etc. It was a reminder to me of the quality people use to expect, and that craftsman use to aspire to. in 2001 that saddle was $3,800 (not cheap), 2-3 months salery for many Texas Cowboys, yet guys saved for a year or two to get one.
This is what we aspire to be. Nothing super flashy, nor trendy. But to those who are looking for it, a product that they can depend on, day in day out, rain or shine.
I have looked at so many campers over the years. There are some great companies out there and solid builds ready to take you on any off-road adventure. What do we do differently? There is a camper for everybody. Some people like all the gadgets you can run from your phone, or a kitchen as good as the one in your house in the galley.
Some people want something cheap that they can enjoy with their family for the weekend and don’t need the toughest thing out there. We know that there is also a group of outdoorsmen and woman that appreciate the peace that simplicity brings to our lives. PIKE is like roll up windows in a Land Rover Defender 90. Always works.
We spend most of our build money on quality parts and coatings that will last for years instead of the flashy extras that look super cool but don’t last. Our frames are laser cut out of 3/16″ 2×3 steel because it is more rigid. Our cabin construction is 1″x1″ square tubing (nobody does this because it is time consuming and expensive) instead of wood or composite because we wanted something that added structure capable of 1000’s of miles off-road.
This entire structure is galvanized because paint doesn’t last and powder coat is not repairable. Our interior walls are marine grade baltic birch. These walls are dang near water proof and we love the feel of wood in a camper over the sterile feel of composit. We use THE BEST mattress we could find, Tochta. If you’re tired from hiking or hunting all day, and are planning on sleeping in a box, it better be comfortable. Our fenders and trim are all coated in bed-liner (not the DIY stuff).
The aluminum skin on a PIKE camper is .063, 50% thicker than the industry standard and powder coated instead of painted for durability. We want PIKE campers rolling down a dirt road 10 years from now that operate the same as the year they were built- hopefully with some scratches from adventuring. An Oliver saddle ages with work, but never looses its ability to function- just like the day you bought it. So does PIKE.
PIKE Off-Road Trailer Camper
We at PIKE know that there are many consumers that are drawn to the flashy things, the newest gadget or technology, and it is possibly a mistake to not go after those folks. But that is not what we personally want in the off-road equipment we use, or what our brand represents. We want the Oliver saddles of off-road camper trailers. If that is you, give us a shout.
